INSTALLATION

Big Picture
Find out the total coverage area and use this figure to calculate the number of shingles needed. Flashings, tape, roofing cement and all other materials necessary would be determined as well.
Preparation
Prep the roof for installation by cleaning the surface (for existing buildings), then installing flashings as needed. Be aware of the amount of space between the edges of flashings. You don't want any situation that could compromise your work and cause leaks. Pay attention to edges and valleys, use the roof’s precise pitch and dimensions when installing flashes.
Underlayment
To prevent water and ice from getting to the wooden structure, an underlayment material is fixed to the roof. at the sides, the material should fold over the face of the edge. After that, install the drip edge. This goes on top of the ice and water protection and overlaps at the seams. One other sheet of underlayment is now laid on top of what is already in place. It is fastened down with staples. A drip edge is attached to the sides of the roof, once all underlayment work is complete. Shingles
Installation
Along the edges of the roof start a line of shingles (this line should have about an inch laying over the drip edge). Work your way up to the ridge, with each new row overlapping the previous lower one. Lastly, install the ridge cap shingles over the ridge. Start from one end, lay each new shingle piece in such a way that it is covering the nailed part of the previous one. Waterproof the nails of the last piece with some roofing adhesive.
Waterproof Vents and Openings
These holes would have been noted from the preparation stage. Place rubber boots around vents, pipes or other openings (like roof windows or chimneys - use flashing when necessary). Fasten flashing in place over boots. On the roof slope, shingles go over flashing on the higher side of the vent, while shingles go under flashings on the lower side.
Inspection
Go over the entire finished roof by looking closely at the edges, vents, openings and the overall surface. If you have grey water available, we recommend pouring some over the roof (as a way of checking for leaks). As you would do for maintenance, be observant of the roof, especially in the first few weeks. This will ensure that any errant glitch is caught and corrected right away.
